During the October meeting, awards were made for the African Quilt Challenge. First Prize winner, Judge’s Choice, was Indu Shah, one of our more senior members, for the amazing job she did on her Masai Women quilt. Hand painting, three-dimensional appliqué and beading with authentic Masai trade beads made this piece truly exceptional. Second Prize, Judge’s Choice, was awarded to Jaswinder Phull for her African Lady quilt. Jasvinder had received the benefit of a group critique of her piece while it was still under construction, so we were all pleased to see it receive appropriate acknowledgement for the African Challenge Quilt. Our Viewer’s Choice quilt was submitted by our American friend Sarah Brewin and chosen for a prize for its excellent patchwork and quilting. All three winners received vouchers good for KQG Classes in 2012!
Our guest speaker was Paula Benjaminson, with us from Gabon to teach some workshops and give added inspiration for the making of African quilts. Paula presented some of her quilts and spoke about the materials and techniques she used to make them. She also spoke with us about Oshiwa printing blocks made in Namibia. These blocks are available for purchase online and can be ordered from the carvers’ Web site, Oshiwa blocks. Paula also spoke about the workshops she would be teaching in the days following the meeting. After seeing Paula’s work, a few more members signed up for her workshops; Paula’s quilts are most impressive!
The meeting closed with our usual show-and-tell session, and the quilts shown below were displayed and applauded by all!
